Above: Trucks at the Variety last week

Derek Trucks Band played its second of two shows at Atlanta’s Variety Playhouse this past Thursday. Like the band’s show at the venue a night earlier, Col. Bruce Hampton & The Quark Alliance opened the night and a number of guests took the stage throughout the evening. A three-piece horn section also backed the group for much of its set, including a cover of “My Favorite Things.” Aquarium Rescue Unit members Col. Bruce Hampton and Jeff Sipe took the stage together partway through the set for a take on “Feel So Bad.” In addition, Trucks’ wife Susan Tedeschi sat in on “Hercules” and “Anyway,” while Jimmy Herring appeared on “Young Funk.” Near the end of the show, Sipe, drummer Ed Toth and guitarist Tinsley Ellis all emerged for “Key to the Highway” and both Tinsley and Herring helped end the performance with a take on “We’re a Winner.” The Derek Trucks Band will appear at New York’s Skirball Center For The Performing Arts this Thursday.
