The Georgia Theatre Struggles To Reopen

In a report posted to, Georgia Theatre owner Wilmot Greene relates the challenges in attempting to reopen the celebrated Athens, GA venue. While it will cost more than $4 million dollars to rebuild the facility, thus far Greene has raised only $167,000. The story presents footage of the fire that gutted the theater as well as images of the work in progress. Meanwhile, Georgia Theatre Presents continues to promote area shows, including Wednesday night with Stockholm Syndrome at the 40 Watt and then on Thursday with Toubab Krewe and The Pimps of Joytime at the New Earth Music Hall.

So I am assuming the insurance money isn’t being counted in that 167K figure. Just saying it is probably quite a payout when a historic building burns…

Not that it is their responsibility, but it’d be cool if Panic and R.E.M. (two prominant Athens founded bands) just ponied up a couple million each to donate to the cause….

Zac Brown already did a benefit at the Fox. Panic and REM could easily do Atlanta benefits that would push them closer to having the necessary funds.

if you read the whole article, it explains how the insurance funds have also fallen far short of whats needed to get the ball rolling. and yes ari, WSP probably do have a million or so to ‘spear’ for a cause so close to home for them (not to mention REM!)
