Another Widespread Panic Hiatus?

Widespread Panic may go on indefinite hiatus after 2011, according to keyboardist JoJo Hermann. In an interview with the Vanderbilt student newspaper Hermann says, “Well, next year will be our 25th anniversary. After that, we’re probably going to call it (quits) for awhile. So we’re looking forward to next year and going out on a high note.” Besides a year off in 2004, Panic has toured regularly since 1986. The band canceled last night’s show in Florida for unknown reasons.

If all you Phish Heads want fusion, listen to fusion. Sure Panic is kind of one dimensional in that they do Straight ahead rock. But they nail that shit like a 15 pound Estwing! I have seen about 70 Panic shows and about 70 Phish shows over the past 15 years. Both bands bring something to the table for me. I am not trying to be peace maker because both cliques have annoying fans. However, one thing is certain as someone pointed out, Phish takes risks and sometimes they bomb. I have never left a Panic show pissed off like I have at Coventry and Raleigh summer 2000 and Merriwether 2009 (and there are others). I play jam music and it seems the times Phish sucks are when Trey sucks. The rest of the band is solid and consistent. I have jammed with guitarists like that. Also, to say Jimmy is the only one worth anything in Panic is insane!!! Schools will eat Gordo’s lunch on bass and Domingo is a madman! So all you Phish Heads thinking that Phish is the best band ever are on too much Molly! They are way too inconsistent to be anywhere NEAR that category. And after they shat in our ears at Coventry whilst they balled their eyes out (and then came back anyway?) they lost a lot of fanbase. Sure they have new ones and the new drudge they put out as music is garnering those fans but they have lost it.

Dope joint! Scoop showed us real aristtic genius by cookin these two styles together into something so real. Hard and kickin with a soft sample deco baby!

What the hell is going on here? You people sound like a bunch of rednecks arguing about NASCAR. This is not indicative of the spirit of music. You are all a bunch of rubes.

Wow February 13, 2011, 01:27:31

I just wasted a few minutes of my life reading these comments and didnt even crack a smile at any of them.
All I could think of is how pervasive PT is and how bored all of you must be to not only degrade people and bands over there, but to also come to this site and continue the same.
Personally I did on the Phish but have mad respect for WSP. With that said, have never understood the debate over who is better, etc. It is pointless. Different strokes, different folks. But what makes it worse is when it becomes not at all about music but about grade school remarks.

Kim February 25, 2011, 18:01:14

dude why the hell do you people bother to post a comment if it’s a negative one. wsp is my favorite band of all fucking time and i wish i could kick your ass, pt

pandora January 13, 2011, 21:47:42

This is really sad news… if they do break up, you will absolutely be able to hear all of their work on www.radiofreeathens.fm, we have a nightly jam-block of all Athens jam bands!

Didn’t I ask for this in another thread recently?!?!? Ask and you shall recieve. Later WSP!

b September 29, 2010, 17:43:38

From another article from 9/27….. One thing fans don’t have to worry about: a band breakup. Unlike some rock stars, these guys check their egos at the door. ``It wouldn’t behoove us to act in an overly dramatic way. It’s not going to impress anyone or get anything done.’‘
Bell says his humble beginnings taught them a lesson about fame. Read more: another from 9/17 Next year, Panic celebrates 25 years together, and the group is showing no signs of slowing down. The band has hordes of loyal fans that still regularly fill large theaters and small arenas, and its grassroots, do-it-yourself business model grosses more than $20 million annually, according to a release. Panic returns to the Charlottesville Pavilion on Saturday night. “I feel like I could do this until I’m 70,” Ortiz said, assuredly. “The creative energy is still lingering, and we’re still having incredible amounts of fun. We’ve come a long way in this business, but we still feel like there are places we can go.”

WP has helped me get past many difficult times throughout the years. I totally understand them needing a break and will miss them dearly!
side note…some people have low self esteem and feel the need to be negative. What a waste!

jason September 29, 2010, 20:32:47

All you haters out there get a life you suck!!

steve September 29, 2010, 21:08:27

Dudes, come by St. Louis before you take a break. Loved the new album anyways. Schools may have some weight but so does his bass. Love you guys.

will September 29, 2010, 22:56:21

No where does it say indefinite. In fact it says “awhile”. This plus the plethora of positive energy that the band and fans leaves little doubt that they WILL be back. And as far as all the idiotic posts – they speak for themselves. Schools (and the rest of the band) are some of the most down to earth and respectful musicians I have had the pleasure of meeting so I would appreciate it if you could keep the ignorant comments to your self

UmpaLumpa September 30, 2010, 03:36:42

I LOVE Panic, they are my favourite band, and I totally understand them needing a break. 25 years…. YEAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

LOVE how they announce it a year before, and say “may” LOLz GREAT BUSINESS MOVE!!! watch the ticket sales sore ps – they’ll be back 2012

Looks like business will slow down next year…...

charlie harper September 30, 2010, 08:50:41

ticket sales WILL go through the roof, great marketing,

Dude You Suck September 30, 2010, 09:30:38

Quit bashing Schools. You know nothing about his personal life. Go back to Phish tour and get Trey his fix.

Shaggy September 30, 2010, 10:01:59

Am I the only one who likes Phish and Panic both? Lots of hostility. :( Hope to catch a few shows b4 the break! Good times good kidz!

Chris Robinson September 30, 2010, 10:14:37

Swirledworld September 30, 2010, 12:54:28

Not touring was the best thing SCI could have done for their fans and maybe it would be good for WSP. Cheese has it figured out that they can play less shows, have a funner time doing it, and produce more of a quality product while maximizing revenue. Brilliant.

kyle September 30, 2010, 13:08:03

Making fun of Schools and Trey is the weakest shit I have seen. Way to go guy by showing your distain for the fat Schools posts with your own Trey drug post. Can you say classy! You try to make your point by by doing the same thing?? Panic and Phish are friends. Sometimes the Jamband scene is the most negative scene out there. We say we are the most positive and a lot of the times we are but when we get negative we get dirty. Needs to stop people.

Doug R. September 30, 2010, 13:12:30

Hats off to the boys!! These cats have given my friends(myself included) MANY great times with great people.Been seein’ em since Hilton Head ’86 & have witnessed many personell change, yet the music these guys delivered RARELY faltered.I don’t blame ‘em at all for wanting to take some(MUCH deserved)time off. They DO have lives & I think 2010 has been one of the best years of MUSIC in awhile.Greenville was a HAPPNIN” time,Tunes4Tots was soooooooo sweet!!,second nite ATL was unREAL!! Keep on keepin on & THEN “go out on a high note”.Take er easy boys!

Jenny Craig September 30, 2010, 13:18:23

Thankfully Dave Schools is joining up with my program and will be a new spokesperson for us during the WSP (who sux btw) hiatus!
We will follow his every move as he battles his unhealthy lifestyle of consistently drinking daily shots of bacon grease, fast food covered in bacon grease, and of course extra thick bacon w/grease.

JKuss80 September 30, 2010, 13:44:39

If WSP has helped you out of dark times in your life you should just KYS and get it over with. I heard they’re taking time off so Schools can compete on The Biggest Loser.

Dave Schools September 30, 2010, 13:52:23

Shut up you little bitch! Keep it up and I’ll eat your family (covered in bacon grease).

ENorm1981 September 30, 2010, 13:56:50

WSP is not a Jam Band!! They are just a wanna be newer version of Lynard Skynard! They are all good musicians, but????? HMMMM?

Piggly Wiggly September 30, 2010, 14:51:57

Schools suckles off pork chops dipped in bacon grease like they’re life sustaining unicorn blood.
He has his bitch “Sunny” reup for him every night on tour. I guess he has connections south of the border.
Anyone check that geezers papers lately?

Muffin Man September 30, 2010, 15:32:23

phish sux WSP rules

sunshine daydream September 30, 2010, 17:07:55

Ya’ll shouldn’t publish indefinite hiatus in this article when the interview clearly says “a while”... a while means they will be back eventually.

Dictionary September 30, 2010, 17:22:37

Lay off the hash, hippie. in·def·i·nite/inˈdefənit/Adjective
1. Lasting for an unknown length of time: “indefinite detention”.
2. Not clearly expressed or defined; vague: “their status remains indefinite”

ENorm1981 September 30, 2010, 17:32:55

Phish and Wsp are not even in the same genre, thats like comparing Frank Zappa to Pantera!
Cmon peeps!

your face September 30, 2010, 18:03:54

WSP are the best songwriters and rock and roll band around today. These little kids need to recognize or just go back to their heady glowstick wars

wsp sux September 30, 2010, 18:16:01

once again for all you red-neck n00b wannabes: wsp sux

ENorm1981 September 30, 2010, 18:25:34

Everytime I hear Wsp it makes me wanna take a shit! Wide Shit Panic! They are not that good of songwriters and there music sounds like heavy southern rock. There is no way they are the BEST Rock n Roll band today. Good musicians, yes, good songwriters no effin way!

W00kin' Panub September 30, 2010, 18:55:03

WSP fans must be tone deaf to a large degree or just not give two craps about good music.
Stretching way back to the “Mikey” days even, this band has been consistently static with innovation. That guitarist had one tone and played one mode/scale through every damn song. RIP brah, but you were nothing special on your instrument. Enter George and then The White W00k. Both brought more to that guitar slot but the fact remained that every show was one dimensional. Most fans these days seem to be more into slugging whiskey and pills, playing dress up, and ogling the weather confused sluts (you know, the ones wearing uggs w/daisy dukes) that infest these shows than caring whats going on with the music.
Have to agree with many here, “wsp sux”.

C-lent October 1, 2010, 02:59:42

Hahah it’s soo funny to see the people on here who ACTUALLY take time out of THEIR day to hate on panic! Y’all must be reallllyyy bored!! Get a fuckin life, to say widespread sucks is so ignorant it’s embarrassing for you to say you even know good music..You douches know wwayyy too much information about these guys to hate this much..Like little children fighting for a toy!

Muffin Man October 1, 2010, 03:35:59

Please, return to Britney Spears/Phish ,
WSP are the best rock ‘n roll band out today. That’s it PHISH SUX

SLAYER October 1, 2010, 10:07:09

I personally agree Phish sux.
At the same time its fact that WSP SUX way more! Mostly due to the very subpar music they play but also that Schools smells like a pile of rotting whale meat and steals meals from small children.

bluesttape October 1, 2010, 13:03:47

Wow, what a bummer to hear. If they really do quit it is time to grow up. No other band can really do what they do, at least none that are still around. It will be a sad day when the boys leave the field.

A Fan of all Music October 1, 2010, 14:41:02

Wow if you haters actually spent this time listening to music rather than bashing a band you hate, I might actually believe you. Its very clear what you spend your time on. Talk is cheap and so is yours. Action speaks louder than any of your words. Isn’t there some distortion you have to get back to? Im sure you would never hear percussion like Panic’s in something like Slayer? Sh*t you wont even hear it in phish. How can you even compare Phish and Panic? One is a 6 headed monster and the other is your typical 4 piece band. Not to say phish is bad, there is just no comparison! WSP is and will be the best band of the last two decades. Just ask Relix!

Spacewranglers October 1, 2010, 14:49:30

Wookin Panub, Tone Deaf? White Wook? Cmon dude, at least there aren’t any gimmicks like walking around on stage with a vacuum cleaner? Where’s your tone there? Most of the music out there is full of stupid gimmicks, but not Panic! Just pure music with great showmanship. Panic is 110% class! Enough said!

MSTaper October 1, 2010, 16:21:41

I like Panic and Phish. No reason for me not to like them both. Will have to start saving $$ for next year’s tour.

sd October 1, 2010, 18:55:28

DSchools October 1, 2010, 21:06:32

I’m fat and my band sux.
You blind tone deaf fluffers need to get a life.

Loubert October 2, 2010, 21:02:38

hahaha…....... Dave Schools could stand to use a few. A hiatus is not a bad idea, maybee jimmy could take this time to relize he is way better than the rest of his bandmates, and he finnaly moves on to something groundbreaking, exiting, and interesting…........................................................

hydr01960 October 3, 2010, 00:43:54

well here we go. after numerous panic and phish shows, i’ve realized that Panic puts on a pretty good show every night. rarely will you see a bad panic show. phish seams to have the potential to throw a better show but like it or not phish goes all out which leave them open to the possibility to throw shitty shows (alpine 2009,blossom 2010, second night at deer creek this year to name a few. if phish come close to your town by all means go check them out. i recommend not driving too far to see them though because you could spend hundreds of dollars to see a god awful.its happened to me on several occasion. anyway something to think about before you plan a trip. so just keep in mind, u could see phish but dont be disappointed when every few shows phish seems to take the night off and play painfully average music. it happens… but something to be aware of. hope this helps

YPanic October 3, 2010, 04:56:49

Why acknowledge the senseless negative comments?
Your only letting them win. Shaggy, your not the only one who loves both. Though Phish is in a league of their own, man can I still have shit tons of fun at Panic. I hope the hiatus is a brief one!!

Loubert October 3, 2010, 15:45:15

Negative, Yes…...... Senseless, No…............
You act like these people hating on panic are clueless. Im sure a majority of the people leaving negative comments seen them multible times.. i dont like panic but ive seen them 9 or ten times at various festivals and whatnot…...

christopher rowe October 5, 2010, 11:27:53

if you don’t like panic thats fine. more for us. fat jokes? what, are you five years old? disrespecting a man who has passed away by saying he was nothing special? Its real easy to sit at home behind a screen name and run your mouth. there are plenty of bands i dont like, but i would never put them down. Panic brings the heat!!! If the boys take a break, good for them, we’ll be there we you come back. All the negative people need to get a life.

jasonbush October 5, 2010, 23:35:24

The boys deserve a break. Hope Jimmy comes back with em’ but if he doesn’t I understand. I STILL WANT MO”!!!

dirkdedirk October 5, 2010, 23:37:22

I cant stand panic. Thats why I have seen them like 40000 times and I still hate em. Eminem rocks though. I’m gonna have sex with my dog now and listen to M’s new album

dildo October 5, 2010, 23:40:29

I’m the one guy that keeps changin my name and writin shit about Panic, cuz I have nothing better to do. Usually I would put peanut butter on my dick and, but I’m outta peanut butter, and my mom want let the dogs sleep in my room anymore. So panic sux and schools is fat, n stuff

christopher rowe October 6, 2010, 12:28:43

i figured the guy writing this stuff lived with his mom and slept with his dog. thanks for confirming what a loser you are. panic rocks.

butthole sperm October 6, 2010, 22:05:06

I saw the dead for 5 years 92 thru 97 saw jerrys last show in new orleans. smoked crack with him. He said panic is awsome

Elgin October 9, 2010, 10:10:02

In all honesty, WSP crowds are a bunch of GOP confused frat boys and sorority girls playing dress up hippie trying to make believe the liberal lifestyle. Then they go back to their BEEMERs and SUVs. I’ve been done with that scene for a long time. Thanks also to the two faced fckrs I met at WSP shows. you all are sooo cool. Get a life

Glenn Beck October 11, 2010, 14:18:14

You’re right Elgin because everyone knows that people who sniff mountains of cocaine and consume distilleries and breweries worth of whiskey and beer every single night are more than likely conservative as all get out. That’s not a bowl rotation at the end of the row you’re sitting in, it’s a prayer circle! In fact this summer we took an old school Hummer on tour because it gets the worst gas mileage and money is no object since we are all in the upper tax bracket. Naturally we had to switch out of our J. Crew sweaters and Dockers once we got to the show so we could blend in with all the other people there playing dress up hippie. I personally put on a GD tee, patchwork pants, and a crystal wrap while avoiding talking about hedge funds or discussing the works of Ayn Rand. (She’s awesome BTW) It worked like a charm and no one was the wiser, besides Elgin of course. Here’s to defeating the progressive socialist agenda in 2012 while Panic is on hiatus.

BR October 13, 2010, 06:02:05

i don’t believe in god, but maybe i’ll start if this mediocre rock band and their drugged out pretentious rich yuppy fan base leaves my native stat of Colorado PERMANENTLY.

Derka October 13, 2010, 20:38:38

phish sucks and wsp sucks…and so do the beatles and led zeppelin DISCO BISCUITS RULE!!!!! jk haha you are all a bunch of geeks arguing over who sucks and who doesnt….fcuk you all

Drago October 17, 2010, 10:48:59

Got to agree…‘WSP fans must be tone deaf to a large degree or just not give two craps about good music. Most fans these days seem to be more into slugging whiskey and pills, playing dress up, and ogling sluts that infest these shows than caring whats going on with the music.
Have to agree with many here, “wsp sux”.’
Heard them on jam_on doing a Doors cover…. just as awful as music could get. Someone’s been lying to these guys and John Bell for too long. It’s not fair. I’m embarrassed for them.

jason bush October 24, 2010, 14:01:42

I just think its sad to see so many people hatin’ on Panic. It’s just sad to see. Even if you don’t like Panic you should be happy to see a real band still around these days. I mean I would say everyone should take notes from there legacy. They all met in college, except jojo and jimmy, started playing for fun, and here we are 25 years later, and there still touring having fun and one of the top grossing live acts ever. In this day and age it is awsome just to see a live musical band out there. Everything now days is just fake. No one tours first then gets big. Now they get big without ever playin a live show. Its all fake. So even if you don’t like Panic or Phish, I dont think people should compare the two, apples and oranges. Long live rock!!!

tonya October 29, 2010, 17:15:02

I am not hating on the band- I like them as well as lots of good music-however some of the fans just annoy the shit outta me. I think some of the fans would not know what to do if Panic took a break. I guess they would find a new band to idolize. The older fans would have to just grow up and go to rehab! :)

don g. thomas III November 20, 2010, 01:26:20

I don’t blame them for taking another break. Doing all that blow 24/7 will make your dick limper than stephen hawking’s schlong in a wormhole. Time to put down the straws i guess. They are freaking out in columbia right now – coke sales will be lower than ever once this break hits. Where will that 300lb roided up jackass on molly that was front row for the fall tour and molesting people’s girlfriends and talking loudly shit about the band and invading people’s space like it was his job do now? back to the gym to shoot horse steroids into his nuts i guess.
