The New Mastersounds are the subject of a documentary film that will have its East Coast premiere in Friday night in New York City as part of the Royal Flush Festival. Coals to Newcastle will screen at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn at 7PM. The film tracks the band as it travels from Great Britain to Louisiana. The title of the film references a British phrase “carrying coals to Newcastle,” which means spending one’s time doing something that is redundant or unnecessary (Newcastle was once a major producer of coal, so bringing coal to Newcastle would be pointless). The tongue in cheek title refers to the band bringing its own signature funk sounds to the birthplace of this music.
