New York’s U-Melt played its final show this past Friday at New York’s Highline Ballroom. The group—which played its first gig in 2003 in the lot of Phish’s IT Festival—toured for seven years, including gigs with marquee jambands like moe., Umphrey’s McGee and Tea Leaf Green. The group released three albums and was named New Groove on the Month on Jambands.com in 2006. The group maintained the core lineup of Zac Lasher (keyboards), Rob Salzer (guitar) Adam Bendy (bass) and George Miller (drums) until late 2009.

U-Melt’s final performance featured several support acts: The Heavy Pets, Haakon’s Fault, Fever Train and DJ Higher Nebulae. The evening’s headliner took the stage shortly before midnight for a two-set show that stretched until the early morning. The band showcased three songs from its the first album (“Green Amber,” “Song Behind” and “Prism”) during its first set, as well as the early live staple “The Eternal Groove.” U-Melt’s second set came to a close with a fitting first-time cover of the Beatles’ “The End.”

Adding a bit of humor to the bittersweet show, U-Melt guitarist Kevin Griffin—who replaced Salzer in 2009—played The Beatles’ ditty “Her Majesty” and the group pretended to walk off the stage, only to return for the extended encore of “415, “Perfect World” and “Tomorrow My Friend.” The show’s final song, an early U-Melt live staple, brought the night full circle around 4 AM.
