Jeff Tweedy made a surprise appearance at Hoboken, NJ’’s Maxwell’s this past Friday. The Wilco frontman was the guest opener for the third night of Yo La Tengo’s semi-annual Chanukah celebration. Tweedy’s show included such songs as “Spiders,” “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” “Via Chicago,” “Gun,” “One Wing,” “The Ruling Class,” “Be Not So Fearful,” Linda Thompson’s “Sometimes It Happens” and “Shot In The Arm.” He later joined Yo La Tengo for the first half of its set, including Gary “U.S.” Bonds’ rendition of “Eight Day Weekend,” “From A Motel 6,” Wilco’s “Jesus Etc.,” “Can’t Forget,” Phil Ochs’ “Chords of Fame,” “The Race Is On Again,” Bob Dylan’s “One Of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later),” The Coasters’ rendition of “Shoppin’ For Clothes” and “I Should Have Known Better.”

The following night, Tweedy headlined New York’s Bowery Ballroom. His Wilco bandmates John Stirratt (bass) and Pat Sansone opened the night with their other band the Autumn Defense. Stirratt and Sansone also joined Tweedy onstage for “California Stars” and “I Got You” during his first encore. Tweedy and Autumn Defense will perform in Tarrytown, NY Monday evening.
