Phish closed a five show New Year’s Run with its first-ever performance on January 1. During their first set, the members of Phish busted out Mike Gordon’s “Round Room” for the first time since July 13, 2003. Trey Anastasio also referenced the previous night’s New Year’s Eve stunt by including a set of special keywords—“I went home late last night after doing the New Year’s stunt, I laid back on my couch and rolled myself a blunt“—during “Makisupa Policeman.” The show featured several improvisational highlights, including a run from Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless” into “Twist” and “Simple” as well as an extended “David Bowie.” “David Bowie” was one of only two songs the band repeated throughout its New Year’s Run. (Phish also played “Backwards Down the Number Line” twice this run.)

Like all of the versions of the song since August, Anastasio sung the verses of “Fee” through a megaphone. The show ended with all four members of Phish at the front of the stage performing “Frankenstein.” (Page McConnell played keytar while Jon Fishman used a cymbal.)
