Mardi Gras took place a little early in the Greenwich Village section of New York this past Saturday. Eric Krasno & Chapter 2 performed at New York’s Le Poisson Rouge on the One Month To Mardi Gras tour with Big Sam’s Funky Nation while the Sam Kininger Band played a late night set at the historic Blue Note a few blocks away. Chapter 2 invited out both pianist James Hurt and trumpeter Maurice Brown during its set, shortly before former Dirty Dozen Brass Band guitarist Jamie McLean and trumpeter Christian Scott joined Big Sam and his band.
Later in the night, many of the above-mentioned musicians moved over to the Blue Note to continue the Pre-Mardi Gras celebration. At various points during the night, Krasno, Brown, keyboardists Nigel Hall and Ivan Neville and bassists Steve Jenkins and Chris Loftlin all joined Sam Kininger Band. This incarnation of the SKB included a few familiar faces, as well: organist Amy Bowles, bassist Aaron Bellamy, guitarist Jeff Lockhart and drummer Nikkie Glaspie.
