Furthur’s St. Patrick’s Day Surprise

Furthur performed at Fairfax, VA’s George Mason University Patriot Center last night. The show fell on St. Patrick’s Day and the members of Furthur surprised the crowd by delivering their first take on the traditional Irish song “Whiskey in the Jar.” Jerry Garcia and David Grisman recorded a version of the song for their Shady Grove album and the Grateful Dead released a 1993 rehearsal of the song as part of the So Many Roads box set. Though part of the Dead family canon, The Grateful Dead never performed the song live. Furthur will perform at Upper Darby, PA’s Tower Theater tonight.

Perfect indeed

This was the ninth show of the tour and the band still managed to play nine songs for the first time this spring. Rotation Chart:

The Dead did Whiskey in the Jar in May at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

May of 2008 I believe.

I love how the writer uses “the Dead family canon”. Like the camera company? So, did the whole “Dead Family” share just one Canon Camera?

ober March 18, 2011, 12:42:07

Do you have something against the word canon? Seems like it’s correctly used to me.

yermama March 18, 2011, 13:50:37

They said The Grateful Dead never did the song, not The Dead. Big difference.

Show was a rager and big fun from start to finish. Entire WRS and Terrapin suites were particular highlights. And a sweet Candyman for Owsley and Fire on the Mountain for the Fukushima disaster. “Take a whole pail of water just to cool him down”

@ Ober, Not the word just the spelling. I always thought a Cannon (that shoots things) was spelled with two letters n, and the Camera company’s name was spelled with one n. Thats why I made the joke! Obviously, I made a point because they tried to correct it this afternoon but they Fucked it up again. Look up there they have it spelled CNNON now?

Kath March 18, 2011, 17:51:03

Jeez, people! If you’re going to quibble about grammar, for god’s sake, get it right. If they used “canon.” that is correct. canon means: the authentic works of a writer. Has nothing to do with the camera company.

@ Kath your Winning!!! March 18, 2011, 20:16:16

Thanks for all the interest in this post. To clear things up, we spelled the word canon—the correct spelling of the word—when we posted this story. After the word usage generated so much interest, we went into our cms to make sure it was spelled right at which point we had a technical glitch and had to relog into the system. While we got back in there the there was a typo up for about an hour (cnnon—-tricky things happen when you try to cut and paste and let logged out). As always thanks so much for the comments and feel free to hit us up directly at or for any additional questions.

To the cat who made the canon statement…you are dumb.

Joe March 21, 2011, 13:02:19

To above… did you go to school to get out and become an editor for the biggest JamBand magazine on the planet. No. So who is fkin dumb, you sir, you.

Yes, sports and photography fans, the sports are winning! The hypnocracy is something up with which we cannot put! So put up (or shut)! Where’s Zippy, when we need him? I think we’re all Bozo’s on this bus…. P Ctr on Paddy’s was a great show, and I ain’t gonna argue about it!
