More Guests Join Surprise Me Mr. Davis at SXSW

Davis’ SXSW promo video

Canadian guitarist Joe Grass, Trey Anastasio Band/Van Ghost vocalist Jennifer Hartswick, Big Light frontman Fred Torphy and noted producer Jesse Lauter all sat in with Surprise Me Mr. Davis at Austin’s Cheers Shot Bar last night. The performance was a last minute addition to the band’s SXSW schedule. Torphy—who named Big Light after one of Davis frontman Nathan Moore’s songs—sat in on “I Hate Love” while Hartswick and Grass both emerged for “Sissyfuss.” Lauter—who has produced The Barr Brothers, James Blood Ulmer, The Low Anthem and Marco Benevento, among others— sang harmonies and played tambourine on “Summer of My Fall” and “I Have Love.” He is currently engineering Davis’ forthcoming album. SXSW continues today.

Always a magical time, literally at any SMMD shows – other than our majestic enclaves of Burlington, VT, I would bet SXSW would be the ideal place to catch this band. Hopefull these gigs will bring some much needed attention to the band’s stepup in promotion and motivation for 2011.
