Elvis Costello’s New York Night

Elvis Costello celebrated April Fool’s Day by playing three shows throughout New York City. His evening began at Irving Plaza where Amos Lee and Secret Sisters were set to perform. Costello opened the night with a performance of “A Slow Drag With Josephine” before joining Secret Sisters for “Why Don’t You Love Me.” From there Costello moved uptown for a surprise—but heavy tweeted—opening spot for The Strokes at Madison Square Garden. Costello played a quick set consisting of “Pump It Up,” “Radio Radio” and “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love And Understanding” and later sat in with The Strokes for “Taken For a Fool.”

Soon after, Costello made his way back downtown for his previously announced underplay performance at New York’s Gramercy Theater. The singer/songwriter’s band consisted of Attractions members Steve Nieve and Pete Thomas as well as Elvis Costello & the Imposters’ Davey Faragher. Later in his set, the members of Secret Sister also sat in for a reprise of “A Slow Drag With Josephine.”

The night was reminiscent of a 1979 Elvis Costello & the Attractions April Fool’s stunt where the band played three New York venues—Lone Star Café, the Bottom Line and Great Gildersleeves—in the same night. As previously reported, Costello sat in with Furthur this past Sunday after bumping to Phil Lesh at his local gym.

I love that Elvis did this on April Fools Day and that he came out with Furthur. He is a great musician and songwriter who is under appreciated. He needs to get himself into the jamband/festival scene a little more because they will embrace him if he lets them in. I like to think that we are all open minded music fans who appreciate talent and he has been killing it for years.

This video is an old Hank Williams tune not a secret sisters song.
