Next week he’s coming to Hong Kong

Last night Bob Dylan delivered the second of three shows in China as he embarks on an Asian tour. The country’s government had indicated in advance that these shows would be “performed with the approved content,” suggesting that the song selection would be limited in some manner. However, Wednesday’s show at the Workers Gymnasium in Beijing, China offered a relatively standard setlist from Dylan’s current touring band. One possible sly reference to government censorship and what the future may hold came with the opening “Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking.” In addition, “All Along The Watchtower,” which closed out the two song initial encore, also contains political subtext (even if it’s not quite the direct message of “The Times They Are A-Changin’”). Following “Watchtower,” Dylan and his group stepped off stage and returned for a rare additional encore, a version of “Forever Young.”

On Friday Dylan will appear in Shanghai at Grand Stag.
