A classic Wetlands moment – photo by Mike McNamara

Back in June of 2000, Fat Mama took the honors as the first act to win the New Groove award at the Jammys. Many of the group’s members have go on to notoriety in other musical contexts, such as: Joe Russo with the Duo and Furthur, Erik Deutsch with Charlie Hunter and Kevin Kendrick with A BIG YES and a small no. Now on September 11 the group will reform once again, replacing Schleigho at Brooklyn Bowl for what is described as a Wetlands Class of ’96, 15 Year Reunion Party. Also performing is the original ulu quintet, which is quite fitting as back in the day the two bands often shared the bill (and the stage) performing fully segued sets on nights titled “ulu vs. Fat Mama.”

Fat Mama—which broke up in 2000—has not performed since a 2007 reunion show at New York’s Green Apple Music Festival. For more on the future of Russo’s Duo project, please read our recent site interview with Marco Benevento.
