Wavy Gravy celebrated his 75th birthday Saturday night with an all star concert at Richmond, CA’s the Craneway Pavilion. Like all of his recent birthday celebrations, the night benefited the SEVA foundation, an organization that works to build sustainable programs in underserved communities around the globe. Music stretched from 7 PM until nearly 3 AM and featured performances by Bob Weir & Friends, Mickey Hart, Zero, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Hot Buttered Rum, Ace of Cups and The Clown Conspiracy, among others.

The evening’s collaborations started early, including an appearance by singer Nicki Bluhm during Hot Buttered Rum’s set on “Fruit of the Vine” and “Blackberry Pie.” Former Hot Buttered Rum drummer Matt Butler also played washboard on a cover of “Bertha.” Later in the night, Bob Weir emerged during Chris Robinson Brotherhood’s set for “They Love Each Other.” Weir also joined Robinson for the same song in Petaluma, CA last month.

Mickey Hart performed with a special band featured guitarist Steve Kimock, ALO drummer Dave Brogan and Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, the latter of whom now lives in California. His percussion-heavy set came to a close with many of the evening’s entertainers onstage for a birthday parade based around “Baba Jingo.” The jam included Tipper Gore on percussion and both Weir and RatDog guitarist Mark Karan on guitar. Zero’s lineup was also something of a super group featuring Steve Kimock, Bobby Vega, Greg Anton, Pete Sears and Berry Sless.

For his show-closing performance, Weir put together a new band drawn from a familiar pool of Dead-associated acts. His core ensemble included Kimock, Karan, Phil Lesh & Friends drummer John Molo, Furthur/RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and RatDog bassist Robin Sylvester. The group ran through Dead classics and Dead-associated covers like “Playing in the Band,” “New Speedway Boogie,” “Tennessee Jed,” “Sugaree,” “Brown-Eyed Women,” “That’s It for the Other One” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad” with the help of numerous guests. Chris Robinson emerged early in the set for “New Speedway Boogie” and “Sugaree” while Bluhm returned with pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless for both “Sugaree” and “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad.” During “The Other One,” Schools took over on bass and Henry Kaiser sat in on guitar. At the end of the set, Country Joe & the Fish co-founder Barry Melton and keyboardist Pete Sears also took the stage for the set-closing sing-along “Goin’ Down The Road Feeling Bad.”

The show wrapped-up an extremely busy seven day stretch for Weir that included a performance with the Marin Symphony and a live broadcast from TRI studios. Wavy Gravy will host an East Coast birthday benefit at New York’s Beacon Theater on May 27.
