Unbeknownst to many, Bonnaroo is named after New Orleans pianist Dr. John’s forgotten 1970s album Desitively Bonnaroo. Dr. John performed the album in its entirety at Bonnaroo as part of the festival’s 10th anniversary celebration this past Saturday with the help of Allen Toussaint, The Meters and, all of whom appear on Desitively Bonnaroo. The pianist also participated in the festival’s signature SuperJam with the likes of The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, My Morning Jacket’s Patrick Hallahan and The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, among others. Riding off the success of his Bonnaroo performances, Dr. John will tour the country with his own band. He also plans to work with Auberbach in the studio.
