Back on August 1, 1998 at the Alpine Music Center Phish performed its debut cover of Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealin’.’ The first performance was otherwise notable as the group delivered the tune with Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon on trampolines. The band then performed the song five more times in 1998 before retiring it from rotation. Last night in Raleigh, NC the song finally returned. Early in the second set at the Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek the group charged into the tune, singing in falsetto (without the tramps). This was part of a show that also included strong takes on “Esther,” “The Ballad of Curtis Loew,” a first set run from “Halley’s Comet” into “46 Days” and a second set sequence that spanned from “Piper” into “My Friend, My Friend” and then “Kill Devil Falls.”

Tonight Phish closes out this leg of its summer tour in Portsmouth, VA at the Ntelos Wireless Pavilion.
