On Friday, several musicians appeared as part of a private party at Tribeca’s Theater Bar in New York City. The event—a 30th birthday celebration for Relix Executive Editor Mike Greenhaus—featured a rare performance by The Slip, jam scene fixture Wyllys and both a DJ set and short acoustic performance by Disco Biscuits guitarist Jon Gutwillig. A handpicked lineup of musicians was also assembled for a freeform jam session that included guitarist Sam Cohen (Yellowbirds, Apollo Sunshine), keyboardist Rob Marscher (Addison Groove Project, Matisyahu), bassist Danny Tamberelli (Jounce, Richard Lloyd) and former Real Estate drummer Etienne Duguay.
The night kicked off shortly after 9PM with a DJ set from Wyllys before Cohen, Marscher, Tamberelli and Duguay took the stage for an open improvisation that lasted the better part of an hour. The Slip performed shortly after 11, playing a celebratory set that included an extended “I Hate Love” tribute to Greenhaus’ 30th. For the second night in a row, Cohen also joined The Slip for a few songs, including “Motherwolf,” “I Hate Love,” “Get Me With Fuji” and “Heartbreaker.” Gutwillig closed out the night with a DJ set followed by an acoustic performance that featured stripped down versions of “Kitchen Mitts,” “M.E.M.P.H.I.S” and a fitting take on “Happy Birthday,” among others.
