Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts: From Blog to Book to Book Website

As previously reported, Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts blogger David Calarco will release a new book on Phish, Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts – An Anthology By A Fan For The Fans, this holiday season. Calarco has now announced a new website to promote the anthology. Mr. Miner’s Phish Thoughts – An Anthology By A Fan For The Fans traces Phish’s reunion through 2010 by utilizing a unique “improvisational choose your own adventure” format. Readers may read the book chronologically or may rediscover the band through a series of “connections” subjects that include: Culture, Songs/Jams, Tours/Eras and Shows.

In conjunction with the book’s release, Calarco is also challenging fans to guess the song lineups for one of Phish’s upcoming 2011 shows. The winner of the contest winner will receive a signed copy of the anthology. The contest closes August 4 and winners will be announced September 6. Fans may also reserve their own copy of the book online.

I’ve been reading Miner’s blog for about 2 years. I always find it an entertaining read even if I don’t always agree on the high points or low points. But if reading someone else’s perspective on Phish’s music makes you really angry then this won’t be your cup of tea. Can’t guess what would be though. If you’re willing to read an engaging thoughtful review from someone with a large breath of knowledge of their music and their history, then it’s worth having a good coffee table book around that you can plink through occasionally. The photography is also pretty amazing.

Too much acid, too many words

Who cares? July 21, 2011, 16:05:53

No thank you, Mr. Miner.

mrs. miner July 21, 2011, 17:06:40

This guy has no idea what he’s talking about. Seriously. Why do the young fans listen to him? Do you really think people will buy this or fans will rediscover Phish through one guys thoughts using a childhood choose your own adventure theme? He is not the voice of most fans. The torch has obviously not been properly passed. :(

Gregg July 21, 2011, 17:43:55

I don’t know if he’s the voice of most fans, but I’ve been seeing the band for ~20 years and his tastes align pretty well with mine. Even if they didn’t different perspectives are cool, right? You’re free to start your own blog. Surprised at all the hate. Congratulations on the book, Miner – I know it was a lot of hard work.

joe July 21, 2011, 18:03:32

instead of listening to blogs, listen to the music. there is no need to profit off of someone elses work.

voopa July 21, 2011, 18:03:45

Congrats Miner!

mitch July 21, 2011, 18:19:12

Big ups miner! Too bad I don’t have a coffee table to show it off on…

Robert Champion July 21, 2011, 19:01:51

I am still on the fence with Mr. Minor and his flowery words. However, I will say this one thing. Phish fans in this online community love to shit on people that are actually putting in effort to create a multimedia experience for the fanbase and for that I give Mr. Minor credit. Hey Mr. Minor….Wanna be a guest on my poodcast sometime? I would love to interview you.

Drgabel July 21, 2011, 19:12:19

Who needs to rediscover Phish from 2 years agi? Should tackle a challenging project like early years. Who needs a drug fueled recollection of last summer? Silly. Plain silly.

kid under the carpet July 21, 2011, 19:27:27

Don’t want to be a writer with my thoughts out on the page….So if I’m inside your head
Don’t believe what you might have read
You’ll see what I might have said
To hear it

Uncle Ebenezer July 21, 2011, 20:01:09

Just spent 3 minutes of my life I’ll never get back reading the comments on this story… and I have a few of my own… to wit:
To mrs. miner: “He is not the voice of most fans.” Since when do phans worry about things having mass appeal? It’s a book about an improvisational rock band- some of the things they play you love, others you don’t. What makes Phish’s so interesting is we all don’t agree on what we do or don’t enjoy about their music. Do you only get into a jam or like a new song if the other people around you like it, or can you think for yourself and let others think for themselves? As long as the writing is well thought-out (which it is), then what the author says is worthy of respect and critical thought. If that doesn’t work for you, you should probably stop listening to Phish and go watch some American Idol.
to joe: “There is no need to profit off of someone elses work.” Are you serious? By that logic, there would be no more books, magazines, newspapers, news websites, or any sort of journalism for that matter. No one would be able to write about music, sports, movies, politics or anything else, because when it’s all said and done, that’s what a lot of journalism is- writing (and profiting) off other peoples work. Get a clue.
To Drgabel: “Should tackle a challenging project like early years.” Yes, because we all haven’t read enough about the early years. Last time I checked, The Phish Book, Phish Companion, Pharmers Almanac, Parke Puterbaugh’s book, and countless magazine articles may have done a pretty solid job on the early years. But apparently you are the one that needs more coverage and info. – Good for David Calarco. Awesome that he wrote this book and awesome that he took such a creative direction with it. As for those I referenced earlier in this post, get a better hobby then ripping people on the internet for trying to do cool and original things.

mr. miners phish thoughts is the cats pajamas. anyone who doubts this is a cat with no pajamas. how does it feel to be a cat with no pajamas? do you sleep well at night? probably not, you most likely had to get up in the middle of the night and try to find an extra blanket in the dark, which we all know is impossible. thank you mr. miner

C July 21, 2011, 21:01:54

Appalled at all the unfounded hate in our community. You should be absolutely ashamed of yourselves.

SillyWilly July 21, 2011, 21:19:49

I saw my first Phish show in 2009. So I’m obviously a young fan. My Phish experience has been enriched tremendously because of Mr. Miner’s blog. Whether or not you always agree with Mr. Miners opinions is beside the point. Look at the space the man has created for all of us to discuss our favorite band. Mr. Miner has created a space online where it is possible for kids to discuss and voice their own phish thoughts in a respectful environment. You can go to the black board and expect to be treated courteously as long as you remain courteous. We all know that most Phish blogs are an embarrassment to tthe community that so many of us love. Finally, I’ve made many great friends using that blog. Not internet friends, but people that I see on a regular basis outside of a Phish context. That’s what Mr. Miner stands for. And I’m grateful for all his efforts to give back to our community.

velvetsea July 22, 2011, 00:51:57

Thank you! Your site is current, no fluff just pertinent info. Whether I agree of disagree with your opinions is beside the point. I know that I can go to this site for the most amazing reviews on some of Phish’s spectacular moments of oneness:)

rizla mon July 22, 2011, 02:19:57

awesome job Mr M. too bad you cant embed all the tasty jams and other selections you have uploaded to the blog over the years!!!

Blooby July 22, 2011, 07:20:15

Saddens me at all the armchair quarterbacking. The man has an opinion on a band that many love. Let him do his thing. Like others, I don’t always agree with his take on things, but I give him loads of credit for putting it all out there. As for those of you who can’t seem to get past ’97, there’s a whole other world out there.

Annoyed July 22, 2011, 08:41:24

I wonder if he’ll have a chapter dedicated to how a show is only amazing if Tweezer is played….

Loubert July 22, 2011, 10:23:35

Obviously ‘annoyed’ wasnt at the second night of Bethel

Loubert July 22, 2011, 10:25:17

Obviously ‘anoyed’ wasnt at the second night of bethel

MG July 22, 2011, 10:40:29

I appreciate his enthusiasm and passion, even if I don’t always agree with him. Hopefully he’s gotten himself an editor to reduce the adjective abuse and tighten up the writing.

andrew p July 22, 2011, 11:27:41

Mr. Miner show reviews can be boiled down to the following: Tweezer and/or Light played= Instant Classic Tweezer and/or Light not played=Show Sucked. I read his blog but it is definitely for the naive, under 30 Phish fan. I am a fan, however, of his no spoilers downloads. That is nice service.

custied July 22, 2011, 12:13:04

in a time where all the old school kids seem to want to do is call the recent tours garbage and reminisce on their fav mid 90’s tour I think it’s a good thing that some are continuing to discuss the band in a positive light. you may not agree with every review and that’s great. really it’s just one man’s reviews that serve as a great starting point for discussion on the current state of the band. it’s a band kids. 3.0 has been a blast. miner is just having fun. and I’m having the most fun at shows since I became somewhat disillusioned with the whole thing around 98. the hate is just crazy. Eat some L. catch some live Phish would good peeps and read miners review in the AM. fun stuff. congrats on the book man.

phoammhead July 22, 2011, 12:24:59

i like miner’s blog and i’m looking forward to his book celebrating the band in this era. well done, Mr.MIner!

nonoyolker July 22, 2011, 12:52:33

Shocked at the comments here – just appalling, Cheers and best of luck to you Miner in this and all that you do. You are a credit to the flock. Thanks to your dedication in celebrating something that we all love. Can’t wait to buy the book

bill the thrill July 22, 2011, 13:24:22

Thank You Mr Miner!
Can’t wait to flip the pages whilst spinning some phish. Question: Is it insecurity or jealousy that makes people hate on a man that is just putting energy into his passion? Cause I have yet to hear a reasoned argument for how he is harming anyone by publishing his opinions on his own blog. For all the haters that don’t like his reviews: start your own blog. There are only 1,000 places to start one for free!

fLEGIONAIRRE July 22, 2011, 13:42:28

Gonna bane up and read on my pampin rood deck. I suggest all you Ned’s do the same.

Admiral Ackbar July 22, 2011, 13:47:41 Tweezer was only performed once in the ten shows that Miner selected as the best of 2010, and zero times in the top five shows. Fact-checking… IT’S A TRAP!!!

Admrial Ackbar July 22, 2011, 13:50:20

“I wonder if he’ll have a chapter dedicated to how a show is only amazing if Tweezer is played….” Reconcile this statement with the fact that nine of Miner’s top ten shows of 2010 did NOT contain a Tweezer. Ready… go. /trap

marcoesq July 22, 2011, 13:56:50

I started reading Miner’s blog back in early summer of ’09 and am amazed how 1 man can write crystal clear, fresh reviews (And PhishThoughts) show after show, night after night for so long. Even after the cannonball run of Augusta>Utica last year, his selflessness had a review up in mere hours. But like what many others have echoed on here, his blog is special not just for his creative and unique perspective on all things PHiSH, but the community that he has established and let flourished throughout the years. Like Silly said, we have all made personal friendships through his board that continue to transpire past Phish. Those of you that hop onto hate are the same ones that have vocabulary that barely goes past the words “WSP SUX” and it doesn’t go unnoticed. It would just be foolish to dedicate anymore than these last 2 sentences to you. Anyways, congratulations Mr. Miner! You have truly outdone yourself and we ALL look forward to your next masterpiece in hardcover coming out later this year. You have established something truly unique and lasting here that has also created a bond between so many people in and around the Phish community. Thank you, Mr. Miner

Ted July 22, 2011, 13:58:37

Mr Miner makes me so ANGRY!!! I go to his site everyday.

Ted July 22, 2011, 14:08:01

I am going to buy his book and read it and get MAD. Adjectives!! Adverbs!!! Arghhhhh!!!

Kyle July 22, 2011, 14:13:18

Congrats from one fan to another. Been seeing them since 95 and 3.0 is great. He writes an opinion blog for christ sakes people you dont have to agreee with it. However, be proud that a fellow head did something with themselves. Im kicking myself for not doing this!

Ted July 22, 2011, 14:26:13

Why does miner go to almost every show and than post a review for all of us who could not attend and than post a bunch of great tunes to listen to?! GODDAMMIT!!!!!

sumodie July 22, 2011, 15:49:31

Miner’s reviews are always a gas to read. His exuberant writing style is a perfect match for Phish’s music. Sure, at times the writing is a bit much and needs better editing, but you know what? Most reviews are posted the next day -for that he earns my utmost respect. Morning coffee & Miner’s blog are like PB&J for me. Can’t wait to read the book!

solargarlic July 22, 2011, 18:23:42

Regardless of whether you agree with his reviews, Miner takes the time to update his blog with creatively worded reviews and tasty jam streams on a near daily basis, and provides one of the few positive phish communities online. I love reading both his reviews and the comments of his community, such a breath of fresh air compared to the jaded hate-fests at PT and week4paug. And there is no better way to couch tour than to listen to nospoilers. Thanks for bringing this community together since ’09, Miner.

phlorida phan July 23, 2011, 15:13:55

The first thing I do every morning is check for a new review/post. You rock miner for everything you do for us heads out there. The bb makes me laugh and proud to be part of something that is truly amazing …..The Phish and Plans.

pkemp85 July 25, 2011, 01:24:14

Although reviewing a Phish show is often an exercise in futility, Mr. Miner has the ability describe any given show in the context of the band’s history and the culture of the attending audience.

stephanie July 25, 2011, 13:42:16

I think it’s pretty cool that someone from the phish community is writing a book that looks professional. I will definitely support this book. thanks for your dedication, mr. miner!!

yemango July 25, 2011, 19:46:57

You don’t have to agree with every review ever written by Mr. Miner, but it’s clear that he is an excellent writer (something that many MANY phans try but few accomplish) and he has a distinguishing ear. Can’t wait…

dubs August 1, 2011, 20:09:11

Talking of or anyalyzing music of any kind, at legnth is mundane. Having said that, Phish keeps it fresh and gives you some subject matter. The “community” is also generally well heeled and fortunate enough to be able to throw money at that which they wish, including coffee table books. Here’s another way to go: Go see this band !, or stream live in front of your coffee table, then discuss, sans book.
