On August 4, Jeff Tweedy quietly made his way to Hawaii for his first ever performance in Honolulu. The show took place at the Hawaii Theatre and opened with a set by fellow Wilco multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone (who rarely plays solo shows). Tweedy took the stage shortly after Sansome, appearing on stage only to have his monitors showered with the traditional Hawaiian leis. “Thank you for the leis. I don’t often get to say that with a straight face” Tweedy remarked. The set featured mostly stripped down versions of fan favorites in addition to a cover of The Handsome Family’s “So Much Wine.” Sansone rejoined Tweedy toward the end of the set for a number of duo tunes including “Born Alone,” “California Stars” and “Heavy Metal Drummer.” The Wilco frontman closed out the show with a solo take on “Walken,” performed unamplified at the edge of the stage.
