At this year’s High Sierra Music Festival in Quincy, CA, ALO members Dan Lebowitz (pedal steel, guitar, vocals), Steve Adams (bass) and Dave Brogan (drums, vocals) formed the new supergroup Brokedown in Bakersfield with The Mother Hips’ Tim Bluhm (acoustic guitar, vocals), Nicki Bluhm (vocals) and Scott Law (electric guitar). The group billed themselves as a tribute to the Bakersfield sound—twangy California country-turned-rock sweetened with heartfelt vocal harmonies. On August 16, the group returned to the stage
at San Francisco’s Connecticut Yankee. Members of Tea Leaf Green, New Monsoon, The Waybacks, The Gramblers, Big Light and other West Coast bands attended the show, which featured such songs as Merle Haggard’s “Silver Wings” (with the Bluhms on vocals). Haggard’s “Okie from Muskogee” (with Borgan on vocals), Buck Owens’ “Hello Trouble” (with Lebo and Law trading guitar leads) and Gram Parsons’ “Luxury Liner” (with Nicki Bluhm on vocals). The band also treated the crowd to a few Nicki Bluhm originals, including a brand new tune caked “Unforgetaboutable.”
