Quiksilver recently announced that the music portion of its Quiksilver Pro Global Surf Contest will be cancelled due to the damage caused to the city of Long Beach by Hurricane Irene. The festival—which is the first of its kind in the United States—was supposed to feature performances by Girl Talk, Portugal. The Man, Neon Indian, Q-Tip and The Flaming Lips, as well as many other artists. However, the surf, BMX and skateboarding competitions will still be taking place, with the Quiksilver Pro surf trials set for Sunday, September 4. 34 of the worlds best surfers will be competing for a $1 million dollar prize, with the winner taking home approximately $300,000.

“The situation has been changing daily, and we recognize that city resources are focused on hurricane restoration and clean up as first priority,” according to a statement on the Quiksilver website. “In that context, we have been informed by the city that the festival and music components of the event are no longer achievable.” More information can be found here.
