MMW and Antibalas Share the Stage in Washington DC

Medeski Martin & Wood kicked off their Halloween mini-tour with longtime friends Antibalas at Washington, DC’s 9:30 Club on Thursday night. Both bands offered their own sets before returning to the stage for a joint performance. MMW’s “Uninvisible” served as a bookend for the collaborative segment, which also included MMW’s “Retirement Song,” Antibalas’ “MTTT,” Antibalas founder Martin Perna’s “Spillfish” and Fela Kuti’s “Egbe Mi O.” The members of both bands then encored with Antibalas’ political anthem “Indictment.” MMW and Antibalas will close their run at New York’s Terminal 5 tonight.

Correction to article: I believe it was Billy Martin (and possibly other members of MMW) that wrote “Spillfish”, not me. Also, the composer of MTTT (Mother Talker Tick Tock) is Amayo: vocalist/percussionist for Antibalas. Thanks, Martín Perna
