Particle Regroups in Denver

Particle in Denver back in 2006

Particle keyboard player Steve Molitz is currently in the midst of a tour with Rich Robinson. Last evening was an off night, however, so he made his way to Denver for a performance with Particle at Quixote’s True Blue. The band was joined by guitarist Scott Metzger who briefly became a member of the group in 2006 before departing. In addition to Metzger the night also saw a variety of hula hoopers, dancing bears and Winnie the Pooh characters on stage over the course of the night. On the musical side the evening included a freaky, psychedelic version of “Ed and Molly” as well as covers of the Kill Bill Theme (“Battle Without Honor or Humanity”) and the theme to Beverly Hills Cop (“Axel F”). In addition the group performed “Also Sprach Zarathustra” the theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time since its version at the Hammerstein Ballroom on May 14, 2005 (which featured Trey Anastasio on guitar and Eumir Deodato on Fender Rhodes).

Particle will return to the stage in December, with a series of shows slated for the final weeks of the year.

So, baaicslly, they’re a bunch of nerds who thoroughly enjoy and indulge in mental masturbation. That’s hardly unique. I was using the Facebook Social Graph application a while ago, and could single out at least two closed subsets of my friends with whom I’ve had very similar conversations. Sometimes it’s just a pissing contest over who’s got more knowledge, but every now and then it’s a worthwhile give-and-take endeavor of alternately teaching and absorbing knowledge. I guess what makes this so special is that they’re all part of the same family. I’m really curious about something. If, for example, they’re discussing Taylor Swift, are they discussing music or her place in pop culture?
