Rising indie-psychedelic band Kurt Vile & the Violators scored an opening spot for Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah show at Hoboken, NJ’s Maxwell’s last night. The group’s celebration of the seventh night of Hanukkah also featured comedian Leo Allen as well as special mix from Yo La Tengo frontman Ira Kaplan. After facing a health scare earlier this month, Kaplan recruited a mix of guest guitarists to help him throughout Yo La Tengo’s Maxwell’s residency. On Friday former Yo La Tengo bassist Dave Rick sat in during the group’s show and last night onetime Yo La Tengo guitarist Dave Schramm played throughout the night. Dave Schramm played on Yo La Tengo’s first recordings in the ‘80s and also contributed to Fakebook in the early ‘90s.

In addition, noted freak folk fiddler Peter Stampfel sat in for a four-song stretch that included Antonia’s “Griselda,” “One PM Again,” The Escorts’ “The One To Cry” and Carole King/Gerry Goffin’s “Wasn’t Born To Follow.” Yo La Tengo tends to end their Hanukkah shows with covers and last night was no different. The band kicked off their three-song encore with The Ramones’ “I Can’t Make It On Time” and then performed both Devo’s “Gates of Steel” and Neil Young’s “Prisoners of Rock and Roll.”

Yo La Tengo will close their Hanukkah run at Maxwell’s tonight.
