After Phish’s Madison Square Garden show last night, Marco Benevento played a late night set at New York’s Highline Ballroom. For this gig, Benevento’s trio included Tea Leaf Green bassist Reed Mathis and Norah Jones drummer Andrew Borger. Benevento’s set included a range of material, including an appropriate holiday take on John Lennon’s “Merry Christmas (The War Is Over).” He also nodded to Phish by performing his new original song “Escape Horse,” which features Mike Gordon on bass, as well as a cover of Phish’s “My Friend, My Friend.” Near the end of the show, Levon Helm Band/Steven Bernstein’s MTO tenor saxophonist Erik Lawrence sat in for “You Know I’m No Good” and “Twin Killers.” Benevento is off until a Jam Cruise performance in early January.
