Phish returned to New York’s Madison Square Garden last night for the second show of their New Year’s run. Coming off a strong opening performance, the group carried the energy into the second night with a powerful opener, “The Sloth,” before moving, unexpectedly, into an early show “You Enjoy Myself” (the song’s last first set appearance took place on August 12, 2004 at the Tweeter Center in Camden, NJ).

Second set opened with a cover of Talking Heads’ “Crosseyed and Painless” as well as the first “Lifeboy” since Phish’s 2009 New Year’s Run. The highlight of the show occurred when Trey Anastasio began playing the melody line of “I Am Hydrogen” atop the jam in “Chalkdust Torture,” which led to a full-fledged segue between the two tunes.

The band returns to the Garden tonight for the third of four performances.
