Iron Butterfly/Captain Beyond guitarist Larry “Rhino” Reinhardt has died. He was 63. Reinhardt got his start in the ‘60s playing alongside future Allman Brothers Band members Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley in The Second Coming. After Betts and Oakley left to help co-found The Allman Brothers Band, Rhino—as he was known to many—continued to perform under The Second Coming name.

In the early ‘70s, he joined the psychedelic rock band Iron Butterfly and, soon after, founded Captain Beyond with members of Deep Purple and Johnny Winter’s band. Reinhardt played with Captain Beyond through the band’s final shows in 1977. In the years since the band’s break-up, Reinhardt performed as a solo musician under various names. He also remained part of the extended Allman Brothers Band family and performed at a benefit for ailing former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dan Toler in 2011. The performance also featured Dickey Betts and Warren Haynes, among others.

Fans can leave memories on the guitarist’s Facebook page. A more extensive tribute is available in the Sarasota Patch .
