New York’s City Winery will hose live rehearsals for two all-star tributes this winter. First up, on March 5 the winery will offer a preview of the Robert Johnson 100th birthday tribute show set for New York’s Apollo Theatre on March 6. The tribute show’s house band leader Steve Jordan will offer a selection of Johnson’s songs and welcome a handful of special guests. These surprise performers will include many of the acts already confirmed to play the Robert Johnson 100th birthday tribute show (possible guests include: The Roots, Chuck D, Living Colour, Shemekia Copeland, Bettye Levettte, Taj Mahal, Keb Mo, Sam Moore and Todd Rundgren). As City Winery explains, “this is a rare chance to not only see artists working through material, but get an intimate and close sneak-peak of this historic concert taking place celebrating the musical legacy of Robert Johnson—considered one the most influential musicians of the 20th century and certainly for the Blues.”

Then on March 12, a night before City Winery founder Michael Dorf’s “The Music of The Rolling Stones at Carnegie Hall,” the event’s Symphony For The Devils—: Lenny Kaye, Tony Shanahan, Jay Dee Daugherty and Jack Petruzzelli—house band will run through a selection of Stones songs. Several acts scheduled to appear at The Music of The Rolling Stones benefit will also join the band during the live rehearsal (the benefit is scheduled to feature the likes of Art Garfunkel, Marianne Faithfull, Rickie Lee Jones, Ronnie Spector, Rosanne Cash, Steve Earle, Taj Mahal, Marc Cohn, The Mountain Goats, Peaches, Jovanotti & TV on the Radio, Glen Hansard, Rich Robinson, Carolina Chocolate Drops and Jackie Greene so the live rehearsal has some serious sit in potential).
