R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills, Let’s Active guitarist Mitch Easter, guitarist Chris Stamey and pianist Charles Cleaver will help founding Big Star drummer Jody Stephens perform his band’s album Third/Sister Lovers at SXSW this March. The ensemble will revisit the cult classic at Austin, TX’s Paramount Theatre on Thursday, March 15. R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, Posies staples—and latter day Big Star members—Jon Auer and Ken String and a slew of vocalists will also guest during the show. In addition, Austin’s own Tosca String Quartet, along with guest brass and wind musicians including Memphis’s Jim Spake, will perform the original orchestrations from the album.

The performance marks the two-year anniversary of Big Star leader Alex Chilton’s death. Stephens—the only remaining member of the original band—has performed Third/Sister Lovers in a number of cities since that time. The ensemble plans to announce its vocalists and other guests in the coming weeks.

A signed commemorative poster will be available at the show with proceeds benefitting the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. Donations to this worthy organization are encouraged. Further information is available at NewOrleansMusiciansClinic.org.
