Tom Morello, The Low Anthem, Alejandro Escovedo, Arcade Fire and More Join Bruce Springsteen at SXSW

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band made their official South By Southwest debut last night. The new, 16-person version of The E Street Band played an intimate show at Austin, TX’s ACL Live at Moody Theater a few hours after Springsteen delivered SXSW’s official keynote address. The show was also something of a public warm-up for Springsteen’s upcoming world tour in support of his new album, Wrecking Ball. Keeping with SXSW’s spirit, Springsteen invited a diverse mix of musicians onstage during his set. Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello—who appears on Wrecking Ball, and is in Austin to perform under his The Nightwatchmen alias—emerged a few songs into the Boss’ set for “Death to My Hometown” and later returned for “Jack of All Trades” and “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”

Later in the set, Gospel-bred MC Michelle Moore performed her Wrecking Ball contribution to “Rocky Ground” live while reggae legend Jimmy Cliff appears on a three-song stretch. Cliff—who was in Austin for a performance on his own—emerged for the iconic “The Harder They Come” and remained onstage for “Time With Tell” and “Many Rivers to Cross.” Soon after, Animals frontman Eric Burdon—who reportedly got in touch with Springsteen via Twitter—sat in for “We Gotta Get Out of This Place.” At the end of the night, Springstene invited a number of musicians onstage for a sing-along version of Woody Guthrie’s classic “This Land is Your Land.” The all-star list of guests onstage included Morello, The Low Anthem, Alejandro Escovedo and Joe Ely as well as Arcade Fire members Win and Will Butler and Regine Chassagne. A night earlier, Springsteen also sat in with Escovedo during his Austin performance while The Low Anthem had opened the show.
