Legendary krautrock outfit Can will release a new box set of previously unheard music, titled The Lost Tapes, on June 19 via Spoon Records and Mute. The collection will feature unreleased studio, soundtrack and live material which were discovered in Can’s coveted studio space following its recent sale. According to the release:

“What they found was years of archived material, not outtakes, but rather tracks which had been shelved for a variety of reasons—soundtracks to films that were never released and tracks that didn’t make it onto the final versions of albums due to space.”

The Lost Tapes, curated by Irmin Schmidt and Daniel Miller, features tracks dating from 1968-1977, with the Can line up of Holger Czukay on bass, Michael Karoli on guitars, Jaki Liebezeit on drums and Irmin Schmidt on keyboards, and on most tracks, vocals from Malcolm Mooney or Damo Suzuki.

You can hear “Millonenspeil,” an edited version of the original track that opens The Lost Tapes in the video below.

To support the release, Can’s Irmin Schmdit and producer Jono Podmore will present ‘The Music Of Can: An Evening of Unreleased Music and Discussion’ on April 17 at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. The two will debut unreleased music from the The Lost Tapes and with a discuss the music with each other and with the audience about the music. Click here to purchase tickets to the event.
