Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby played a pair of “alone and together” shows at Oakland, CA’s Fox Theatre over the weekend. Though the musicians have toured together as members of the Grateful Dead, The Other Ones and with their own bands, this is the first time the longtime friends have co-headlined shows as a duo.

Both nights Hornsby and Weir played a set on their own and then returned for a joint set and encore. Most notably, on Saturday night Weir opened his solo set with “My Brother Esau.” As previously reported, Weir had not played the song live since 1987 before the members of The National and Yellowbirds persuaded him to relearn the song for last week’s Bridge Session HeadCount benefit. Hornsby also mixed material from his various projects, including his new musical SCKBSTD and a new song written with longtime Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. Instead of a set break, on Sunday Weir invited out Hornsby during “Not Fade Away” and the song segued into the musicians joint performance.

Weir and Hornsby will perform together this summer with a band that includes several Hornsby collaborators and Branford Marsalis.
