Dr. John & The Lower 911 and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Open Newport Jazz
Dr. John & The Lower 911 and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band will perform at the Newport Jazz Festival’s opening night celebration. The evening—which has been dubbed Bourbon Street Comes to Bellevue Avenue: Newport Salutes New Orleans—will take place at Newport, RI’s International Tennis Hall of Fame at the Newport Casino on Friday, August 3.
Noted pianist and Newport Jazz founder George Wein has deep roots in New Orleans and also created the Newport Jazz Festival.
“It has been a dream come true that I have been able to enjoy producing these two great festivals. My love for New Orleans cuisine of gumbo and crawfish is only exceeded by my passion for Narragansett Bay lobster and New England clam chowder,” Wein said in a statement.
Newport Jazz’s festivities will move to the nearby Fort Adams State Park on August 4 and 5. Tedeschi Trucks Band, Christian McBride’s Inside Straight, The Bad Plus with Bill Frisell, Rudresh Mahanthappa’s Samdhi and John Ellis are among the many acts slated to appear at the famed jazz fest.
