Dr. John kicked off the third and final weekend of his extended Insides Out residency at New York’s Brooklyn Academy of Music. Thee first two weeks of Dr. John’s BAM run focused on the music of Louis Armstrong and his new album Locked Down, respectively. This weekend’s run of shows celebrates the music of New Orleans.

Dubbed ‘Funky But It’s Nu Awlins,’ last night’s show featured appearances by a cross-generational mix of musicians, including Irma Thomas, Ivan Neville, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Nicholas Payton, Davell Crawford, Donald Harrison and Tamie Lynn, among others. Dr. John and members of Dirty Dozen opened the show with a second line parade through the audience and onto the theater’s historic stage; there they joined Dr. John’s band The Lower 911 and Crawford.

The members of Dirty Dozen Brass Band remained onstage for a few songs and, throughout the show, Dr. John brought out a number of additional musicians for mini-segments. The evening’s setlist focused on New Orleans classics, including “Hey Pocky Way,” “Right Place, Wrong Time” and “St. James.” At the end of the night most of the evening’s guests returned for ensemble take on “Big Chief.”

Dr. John and the same cast of performers will return to BAM this evening and this Saturday.
