The songwriter tribute project The Losers Lounge will perform the songs of Carole King this week. The three-show tribute will take place at New York’s Joe’s Pub from April 26-28. To mix things up, several veteran female singers will perform songs King originally wrote for their ‘60s girl groups with The Losers. Those singers include: Lala Brooks of The Crystals (April 26, early show on April 27)—who will perform the still controversial “He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)”—Margaret Ross of The Cookies—who will perform a King song from her repertoire (April 27, both shows)—and Beverly Warren—who will take the lead on “Let Me Get Close To You” (Friday April 27, both shows), a song she recorded at the age of 15, and performed for the first time 50 years later in 2011 during the Girl Group show at Lincoln Center. Yo La Tengo guitarist Ira Kaplan—who regularly performs King’s music—will also join the cast this evening. The performances will also nod to all eras of King’s work.
