Soulive and Karl Denson will celebrate the life of noted jazz guitarist Melvin Sparks this summer. The musicians will partner for a two-night run at New York’s City Winery on June 29 and 30 billed as SPARK: A Tribute to Melvin Sparks. The evenings will also celebrate the release of Spark, a new Soulive/Denson EP dedicated to the guitarist. Soulive and Denson recorded the four-song EP in 2011 shortly after Sparks passed away. The album includes the new original song “Spark,” as well as covers intended to capture the smoky vibe of early-’70s-era CTI Records.

“I’m older than the Soulive guys,” Denson said in a statement. “When I heard those records being sampled back in the late 80s, early 90s, popping up in clubs when I was over in Europe touring with Lenny Kravitz, that’s what really prepared me for this whole thing we’ve been doing for the last 20 years. It was a natural progression for me to finally do something in the CTI vein.”

Spark will be officially released on June 19.
