Legendary acoustic guitar player Doc Watson, 89, is in critical condition at a North Carolina hospital after undergoing colon surgery.

An statement from his management company Folklore Productions International reports that Watson suffered a fall earlier in the week at his home in Deep Gap, NC, and was taken to a hospital where his condition was discovered to be more serious than the injuries from the fall.

Watson recently performed at Merlefest, the festival he founded following his son Merle’s tragic passing in 1985. He has won seven Grammy Awards, including a 2004 Grammy Lifetime Achievement award. Most recently, he won in 2006 in the category of Best Country Instrumental Performance for his playing on “Whiskey Before Breakfast.”
