Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff will release a new studio album, Rebirth , on Tuesday, July 1. Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong—who worked on Cliff’s 2011 Sacred Fire EP—served as the album’s producer. “I was inspired to re-visit my musical past and decided to go back to my roots on this record,” Cliff said in a statement. “ Rebirth is a new chapter in my life and signifies a rebirth in my career and all I have left to accomplish.”

“Jimmy is one of my musical heroes and I’ve been responding to his music my entire life,” Armstrong added. “I enjoy the creative spontaneity of collaborating with other people. I always want to try new things. It’s the type of creative energy I have.”

In addition to a number of original songs, Rebirth also includes covers of The Clash’s “The Guns of Brixton” and Rancid’s “Ruby Soho. “

Cliff recently opened the 2012 season of Brooklyn, NY’s Celebrate Brooklyn! with a free performance in Prospect Park. During his set at the Opening Night Gala, Cliff ran through a number of his greatest hits, including “The Harder They Come.”

The reggae singer will perform at Denver, CO’s Ogden Theatre this evening.
