Coachella and Stagecoach May Move Locations After 2013

After more than a decade in Indio, CA, the veteran music festival Coachella may move locations in the near future. According to an article in The Desert Sun, festival promoters Goldenvoice “are threatening to move the shows — possibly out of the Coachella Valley — if a proposed admissions tax is enacted by the host city.”
In addition to Coachella—which expanded to two weeks this year—Goldenvoice presents the country fest Stagecoach on the same Indio polo fields every spring. They also hosted Phish’s Festival 8 event at the polo fields in 2009. The article reveals that polo club owner Alex Haagen III said he and Goldenvoice would build a new venue somewhere else. “If the tax initiative of putting $4 million to $6 million onto Coachella gets on the ballot,” Tollett says, “we’re going to take off 2014; 2015 we’ll be at a new facility outside of Indio.”
The change in location could allow the popular festivals to expand their size and scope. The year off would also give new festivals an opportunity to stake their ground in the booming festival market. Coachella 2013 will take place in Indio the weekends of April 12-14 and April 19-21.
