Phil Lesh and Friends kicked off the first of four Terrapin Hoedowns at San Rafael, CA’s Terrapin Crossroads last night. Joining Lesh for the show were a group of the venue’s regulars including Ryan Adams & the Cardinals pedal steel player Jon Graboff, Ollabelle multi-instrumentalist Tony Leone, Hot Buttered Rum fiddle Aaron Redner, guitarists Ross James and Grahame Lesh, as well as unannounced guests Connor O’ Sullivan on mandolin and vocalist Elliot Peck.

The show’s song selection relied mostly on covers, including takes on such numbers as The Band’s “Up on Cripple Creek,” Van Morrison’s “And It Stoned Me,” gospel staple “I’ll Fly Away,” the traditional ballad “Wreck of Old #9,” Bob Dylan’s “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight,” Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl,” and Black Veil Bride’s “Mortician’s Daughter.” The show closed out with a version of “Ripple” featuring three mandolin players.
