Phil Lesh Performs American Beauty

Phil Lesh closed his “album week” run at San Rafael, CA’s Terrapin Crossroads last night. The show was free and took place in the venue’s bar space. After performing Gram Parsons’ Grievous Angel and Bob Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks earlier in the week, Lesh looked closer to home and performed the Grateful Dead’s 1970 classic American Beauty in its entirety during his first set. Then, he returned for a second set that was built around “Viola Lee Blues.”

Throughout the night, the bassist was backed by Grahame Lesh, Brian Lesh, Mark Karan, Barry Sless and Scott Padden. Phil & Friends already performed the American Beauty companion album Workingman’s Dead in its entirety as part of Terrapin Crossroads’ opening celebration.

Here’s a look at last night’s setlist via Philzone.org

Nathan-please Do not give him any ideas about taking his kids on the road. Listening to his sons is one thing for free but to pay for it is a crime.

On the road ? ..SURE! Im POSITIVE that Phil can afford to take his “children” on vacation to 20 venues around the country and put on FREE shows just like Terrapin crossroads..which aint a crossroAD UNLESS IT GOES IN THREE OTHER DIRECTIONS..NAMELY EAST NORTH AND SOUTH

Phil Lesh ought to be ashamed of himself for making money off a dead man, how about something original Phil?

Bob August 20, 2012, 20:18:01

Phil isn’t “making money off a dead man.” Don’t know if you remember this, PM, but there were a lot more guys up on those stages and in the studios than Jerry Garcia – and one of those was Phil. If you’d rather worship an icon that hear good music, fine – play past recordings for all they’re worth. But unless you’re an attorney representing Garcia’s estate, back off the criticism of extremely talented musicians who themselves wrote some of that music and are keeping it fresh and new every time they perform.

Keep doing what you want Phil. Don’t listen to the aholes who post on this site. It’s been a blast going to see you in whatever configuration you’ve played. After seeing over 250 Dead shows, I must say the shows today are better than most of what I saw since the mid 80’s.

Phil Lesh is simply a musical treasure. And post-Jerry he has consistently delivered amazing music. As long as he keeps playing, I will keep listening. Thank you, Phil!!!
