The annual Canadian festival and showcase Pop Montreal took place last week. Pop Montreal featured hundreds of performances throughout the city, as well as some unique non-musical offerings. One of the latter events was the annual Pop Vs. Jock basketball game, where musicians including members of Arcade Fire and The Strokes faced off against McGill University’s basketball team. Kid Koala and a costume-clad Regine Chassagne of Arcade Fire provided the game’s soundtrack.

During halftime, Arcade Wire’s Win and Will Butler and The Strokes’ Nikolai Fraiture all left the court to join Pop Montreal performer David Byrne for covers of Question Mark & the Mysterians’ “96 Tears” and KC and the Sunshine Band’s “That’s The Way (I Like It).” A video of the halftime show via Consequence of Sound can be found below.

In addition, during Pop Montreal a handful of artists played the music of Tom Waits at Breakglass Studios. Billed as Shut Up and Eat your Ballads: An evening of Tom Waits, the all-star group featured Michael Feueurstack alongside Little Scream’s Leif Vollebek, Michael Feueurstack and The Slip/Barr Brothers’ Brad Barr. The entire event was recorded live to tape.
