Two young guitarists, Jonathan Wilson and Lukas Nelson, sat in with Furthur at Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre on Friday night. Partway through their first set, Furthur brought out Wilson for “Mission in the Rain.” Then, Nelson emerged for a set-closing sequence that included Furthur’s debut of “I Shall Be Released” as well as “Althea.” Later in the night, Furthur brought Nelson and Wilson back for the evening’s second set closer “Gloria” and the lone encore of The Beatles’ “Revolution.”

The collaborations continued during Furthur’s tour-closing show at Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl last night. During their first set, Furthur brought out Wilson for two songs. This time the guitarist sat in on “Big Boss Man” and “Ramble on Rose.”

Wilson first entered the Grateful Dead’s extended circle through the regular Laurel Canyon jam sessions he’s hosted at his home for a number of years. He recorded an unreleased album with Phil Lesh and Chris Robinson and, more recently, played with the bassist at Terrapin Crossroads. Wilson also participated in Weir’s Jerry Garcia tribute at TRI Studios in August, where he performed “Mission in the Rain” and many other songs. He is also a noted solo artist and producer.

Nelson has been close friends with Weir for a number of years. Earlier this year he rehearsed and performed at TRI. He also jammed with Weir at the Grateful Dead guitarist’s Mill Valley, CA club Sweetwater. They performed “I Shall Be Released,” among other tunes. Nelson also leads the roots-jam act Promise of the Real.

Furthur is off the road for the rest of the fall.
