Trey Anastasio Confirms Phish Will Be Working On New Record

Trey Anastasio has confirmed that Phish will be hitting the studio for a new record “pretty soon.” Rumors that Phish will be working on a new album have been floating around for some time, but Anastasio set the record straight when he briefly mentioned the upcoming record in an interview with Chicago’s WXRT, which aired earlier today. Anastasio also discussed his latest album Traveler, as well as his symphony tour and his life in New York, among other things. We have the full interview below, courtesy of YEMblog

I totally agree with Brian. Mellow out and enjoy the music people

JLips October 18, 2012, 18:41:40

This is great news! Hopefully an injection of new songs will excite the band once again. 2012 was the most stale year of 3.0 (imo). FAR more excited about new tunes/new energy rather than an extended nostalgia/money grab that would be a 30th Anniversary t00r.

Brian, I take offense to your comment… it just so happens I AM a walking encyclopedia on Phish… I can tell you EVERYTHING about them… but I won’t, I’m keeping all to myself because you insulted me… when I die, people will blame YOU for there not being every bit of Phish detail recorded… I hope you’re happy with yourself!

dude!? October 18, 2012, 20:29:39

What the hell has happened to the phish community….you are a bunch of pompous windbags who love to hear themselves talk…problem is, you have nothing worth mentioning. Meanwhile the boys are making inspired and fun music for you all to enjoy. Yet you would rather focus on the other pompous windbags in the room. I for one am a fan of the music that comes from the hearts and minds of my favorite 4 musicians, not the pompous windbags to my left and my right.

steve October 19, 2012, 01:58:26

Visa numbers start with the number 4…but whatever. Old bearded men twirling around in colorful dresses on the cheese tour? Well….fisherman wears a dress that’s colorful.. Either way souds like a party to me!!!!

Monkey October 19, 2012, 05:00:20

To call this the most stale tour of 3.0 is just plain silly. This was the tour where they finally got back to where they were before they went on hiatus (the first time). Perhaps beyond. 2.0 was worthless. 3.0 has been building to THIS. It’s clear from his playing that Trey is practicing again and that he is really paying attention and once again really caring about it. I think he took it for granted for awhile, but not anymore. Mike sometimes takes over shows with his ridiculous bass bombs (he was MVP of several shows I’ve seen/heard this summer). They are all at the top of their game. And now we wonder….where do they go from here?
To be fair….I get that some things are overdone:
1. I want to bitch about the over abundance of Tweeprises, but whenever I see them live, I think I’m going to grow a jetpack out of my ass and fly over the stage.
2. Some 1st set songs are WAY overplayed (i.e. Moma, Possum, ACDC etc.)
3. Alaska should never be played again. Other than that….super stoked.

Dr. Mantis Toboggan October 19, 2012, 10:58:25

new songs yet to be recorded: Steam
Summer of ’89
Dr. Gable
My Problem Right There
Halfway to the Moon good start to an album. am I forgetting any new songs?

phan October 19, 2012, 13:23:16

Tim- in addition to Steam, Phish has debuted within the last 2 years the songs Pigtail and Burn That Bridge. Dr. Mantis points out a number of other “new” songs (meaning 3.0 debuts, though Tim is hyper-technically right when he disregards them from his category of song debuts over the last “2 years.” For example, at the time of this writing, My Problem Right There debuted exactly 2 years and 9 days ago). To this list of 3.0 debuts I’d also add Show of Life, Idea, and What Things Seem. Now, I know that Idea and What Things Seem have been recorded by Mike Gordon solo already, but I don’t see that as precluding Phish from also someday recording these songs if they so chose. Think of Let Me Lie, which first appeared on Trey’s solo album Bar 17, then on Phish’s Party Time.

has anyone else used this dudes credit card info to order shit yet?

BoBo October 19, 2012, 14:28:26

Blah, Blah, Blah. It just amazes me whenever anything about Phish is posted so many people need to comment. Who gives a flying fuck about fish. Their last few studio albums have totally sucked donkey balls. Really people, get a fuckin’ clue as well as a fuckin’ life!!!!

i hope the band takes some of the gains secured via 7/8/12, 8/31/12 and 9/2’s second set, because on those 3 nights, Phish returned, and exceeded themselves. The SPAC Piper (it feels so good to be able to say that again – 6/19/04 Piper is THE greatest jam the band has ever done), the 8/31 Jim and Chalkdust and the 9/2 Sand represent new high-water marks for 3.0 Phish. Its so great having THIS kind of band back again. But I seriously doubt they’ll ever be able to re-capture the what, nearly-6 minute peak from the 6/19/04 Piper? (from around 23:00 to 30:00 its literally straight fire.) Shit is just silly.

Chris McConnell October 22, 2012, 03:18:45

It always amaze’s me that when there is a story on Phish and you can post comments there’s always a couple of jerks writing that Phish sux or whatever. I’ve listened to alot of different music and have come to believe Phish is the best band out there. I will never forget the fun i’ve had on tours and the amazing concerts.

Just Friggn Ridiculous October 22, 2012, 13:23:48

It always amazes me how personally offended people get about Phish, and how they hold their own opinions higher than Trey’s opinion himself, let alone any other phan. The Phish Phamily used to be a community that was so kind to each other and stuck together in the face of the bullsh**t that is todays mainstream music. It’s sick what has become of some of you “phans.” It’s not a contest to see who is more right or a bigger Phan. You all should take a look in the mirror and figure out where your lives are failing you that you have to hide on a computer screen and rip each other apart over something so meaningless as weather or not the new album will be all unheard songs. You are probably all the same people who won’t SHUT UP while standing next to me during beautiful jams you don’t like at the show. From reading some of these comments, most of you don’t even seem to realize that Trey has written quite a few of these songs for the TAB band (Let me Lie, First Tube, Gotta Jibboo, etc) and simply brought them over to Phish by choice. But since the TAB band is NOT Phish, many of you diss it so ridiculously it astounds me. Sorry Trey didn’t check with you first to see what HE should do with HIS music. Enough. It is NOT all about you…

Ron October 22, 2012, 13:42:40

sickness bring on a big festival at a time when people can actually go (i.e. in-between college semesters/a reasonable weekend). cheers!

Charles Brown October 23, 2012, 06:41:17

God, this is what its become?....anyone who likes SCI is seriously musically retarded. That being said, I feel sorry for phish, at least the Dead had good drugs during the final years, all phish has is a bunch of whining frat boys who think that SCI is good. Puke.

Bryshenzy October 23, 2012, 10:38:18

To the people who are getting all uptight just go TUCK IT (john fishman style, not silence of the lambs style…well actually either would work) look in the mirror and ask yourself why you are getting so upset. All I have to say is 2012 summer was incredible! Im thinking with Trey doing the TAB stuff then hitting the studio with phish could set us up for a mind blowing NYE run!!! Its a good time to be a phish fan!

Mango Metro CO October 26, 2012, 10:44:44

Some people talk about people, other people talk about ideas. I’m more interested in ideas so I can’t comment anymore than this on the trash talk above. Doesn’t really matter. I’m really looking forward to hearing what these four (plus) creative musicians have in store for us in 2013. Last year was definitely a highlight reel type of year. It would be really cool if Cloud 9 put on a fish festival somewhere in an exotic spot like the party Panic is throwing.

Surlybuf October 28, 2012, 05:13:02

Granted, I never made it the whole way through The Traveller, I hope Trey got all those power ballads out of his system. I want a phish album with some hooks and changes and a mix up of time signatures. Oh yeah, and some funkiness. No Alaska’s, please. Many bands write 25 songs and give you the best 12. Sometimes I feel phish only writes 12. And that is what you get. Here’s to hoping they write 25. I’ve been waiting for a great album since Farmhouse. Even though that one had to grow on me a little. Two or three choice songs do not make a great album. Yes, they rock out live, but I hope they still have a great album in them. If Gordon can still do it with Kottke, he should still be able to do it with his best buds.

UM October 29, 2012, 15:01:03

I know most of you. I know what you look like. I know where you are because my computer has an app that activates your camera. I can see you. You can’t see me. I am saying one thing to you over and over in my head. Pretty soon you will do that one thing. Ha!

GG November 1, 2012, 04:19:56

Wow I just read through 27 post mostly filled with garbage babble.. Bottom line is we get to experience one of the modern musical geniuses of our time and he is full of Joy, and full of life, and full of creativity.. There is nothing Trey and the boys can’t do. They evoke every emotion and feeling imaginable through their unbelievable and genuine approach to music. 2012 summer tour was a othing short of outstanding.. Great interview from Trey. Lots of insight of where he is at in life and what is comming down the pipe and most of you fools up above would rather waiste your time with trying to chop at the ankles for what? Does it make you feel better… All I know is I’m feeling the space where Trey resides and I’m all aboard to see where Phish takes us in the years to come. It’s all but a forgone conclusion that this album will be a cut Above and in a class unto itself in the continued legacy. Whatever the song choices may be, you can guarantee that is will be filled with heart and joy oh yea and some mafkn talent.. The boys are Back.! Get on or roll out and take the negative bs spew with you. Ps Trey and Red Light.. The KFCYum center in Louisville KY is begging the boys to make a stop on tour!

CheesePlease October 18, 2012, 16:15:07

This is pretty good news. Its probably a good indicator the band will be doing some more extensive touring rather than just summer tour and a NYE run. The only problem is i bet wevre heard a lot of the songs already that will be on the album.

Tim October 18, 2012, 16:23:04

What songs? Phish hasn’t debuted a new song in over 2 years other than Steam. Page told Rolling Stone that they are starting from scratch, coming in with no songs in order to capture the vibe of Ghost/Siket, etc.

Phluph October 18, 2012, 16:30:17

I agree that this is great news. However, any extra touring this year would be associated with the band’s 30th anniversary. Phish hasn’t toured for album sales in like 15 years. I think they’re pretty much over the fact that they do not sell records.

nick October 18, 2012, 17:02:19

What has happened to “Phish fans?” Hey Cheese Please, u talk straight from ur butthole. Go back to Cheese tour. More extensive touring? They have been touring like madmen and did a summer, fall and NYE run. Oh and all the “new” songs…uh, like what? U prob can’t name 10 Phish songs. Are you 12 yrs old? Ok I’m done with ya….

Mace October 18, 2012, 17:22:57

^^^Some of us Phish kids tried Cheese tour. It just wasn’t classy enough for us. Plus large bearded men wearing glitter and colorful dresses twirling around starts to get uncomfortable.

Brian October 18, 2012, 17:27:59

Let’s all just mellow out and enjoy the music. Everyone thinks they’re some kind of walking encyclopedia on Phish. It’s not about the number of shows you’ve been to, or how many songs you can name, its how many shows you can remember.

Samwise October 18, 2012, 17:38:57

I have fun on Phish and Cheese tour. One has a few frat boys, the other has a few bearded dudes twirling around in colorful dresses. Personally, the frat boys bother me more. But hey, its all fun, right?

Harpua's Revenge October 18, 2012, 18:09:28

@ Cheese Please, How dare you futha mucker !!! I bet there are no repeat songs on the new album. No songs we’ve heard on tour, but haven’t been released on a studio album. I’m willing to bet $2,000 dollars. I’ll send you all my bank information for anyone that wants to bet. There’s about 10 K in there. My account number is Visa: 9892 4398 7633 5401. Security Code is 231. Thanks. I trust you dude.
