Freddy Koella Joins Bob Dylan Onstage

Bob Dylan performed at Santa Barbara, CA’s Santa Barbara Bowl on Monday night. A few songs into his set, Dylan invited out Freddy Koella to play guitar on singles from very different periods of his career, “Things Have Changed” and “Tangled Up In Blue.” Koella was a member of Dylan’s touring band in 2003 and 2005. In 2006, the multi-instrumentalist also released his first solo, instrumental album, Minimal.

Despite claiming that he records albums to have new music for his live show, Dylan has not introduced any new songs since he released Tempest in September. He will perform in San Diego, CA this evening.

I saw 8 Shows with Freddie Koellea back in 2003.
He’s the best guitarist dylan ever worked with.
Hope he comes back! Roll on Bob! Love, Frank

I’ve been expecting a guitarist switch since the summer show I saw. Stu didn’t even play until the 4th song and Charlie was pretty close to removed from the mix entirely. Bob has a short attention span with guitarists… he lets them show off for a couple tours, then has them hold back a bit for a while, then has them hold back on doing anything at all, then turns them down in the mix and invites someone else to sit in. This makes sense though: Freddy has a more off the wall, jazzy guitar style than Charlie and since Bob moved to piano there’s less blues-rock in the sound.
