Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe hosted their
Funk Disco Halloween show at The Ogden in Denver last night. In accordance with the night’s billing, the band focused on funk and disco classics throughout the show. At various points throughout the show, KDTU was joined by Jennifer Hartswick, two extra horns, two extra backup singers and four extra string players. DJ Z-Trip opened for them.

The show kicked off with a rendition of Barry White’s “Love’s Theme.” Jennifer Hartswick then sat in with the band for The Bee Gees’ “If I Can’t Have You,” with Liza Oxnard and Devon Parker also augmented her on stage for Chic’s “Le Freak.” Hartswick sat in on a few more tunes throughout the night, including Blondie’s “Rapture,” Lipps Inc.‘s “Funky Town” and Anita Ward’s “Ring My Bell,” while Oxnard helped out on Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” Parker contributed to Donna Summers’ “Love to Love You Baby” and the two of them joined KDTU on Peaches and Herbs’ “Shake Your Groove Thing.” The band also played covers of The Trammps’ “Disco Inferno,” Blondie’s “Heart of Glass,” KC and the Sunshine Band’s “I’m Your Boogie Man,” Barry White’s “Can’t Get Enough of Your Love, Babe,” Van McCoy’s “The Hustle,” Tavares’ “Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel” and Heatwave’s “Boogie Nights.” In addition, the rendition of Walter Murphy and The Big Apple Band’s “A Fifth of Beethoven” was spiced up by guitar and violin solos.
