Malcolm Leo, the so-called “rockumentarian” behind This Is Elvis and The Beach Boys: An American Band has started a Kickstarter campaign to raise money for a film about Jerry Garcia. The movie will be based around footage from a more than two hour long interview that Leo did with Garcia in 1987. The interview, which was done for Rolling Stone Magazine’s 20th Anniversary TV special, was shot by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Russell Carpenter. Most of the footage has never been seen by the general pubic before.

Leo and his team intend to make the definitive film on Jerry Garcia, but they want to do it outside of the studio system. That’s why they’ve started their Kickstarter campaign to raise at least $400,000 for their documentary, Jerry: The Movie. The bulk of the money will go to licensing music, film and images, so the more money they have, the more cool stuff they can add to the documentary.
