Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks, Allman Brothers Band bassist Otiel Burbridge and the North Mississippi Allstars Duo will participate in the Roots Rock Revival master class event next year. Held at Big Indian, NY’s Full Moon Resort in the Catskills from June 3-7, the event will include master classes, clinics, live performances and other jam sessions. The NMA Duo consists of Luther and Cody Dickinson.

The event’s syllabus includes such classes as:

The “If James Brown Can Have Two Drummers, So Can I” Workshop

That is what Duane told Butch and Jaimoe, and the rest is history. Butch, along with Cody and their technical teaching assistant, will demonstrate the dynamics of The Allman Brothers Band Two- Drummer Style. Those attending the workshop will be invited to actively participate.

The Legacy of Duane Allman: A Multi-Media Presentation by Butch Trucks

Butch will present a personal reflection of time he spent living and working with Duane Allman, a person he credits with profoundly changing his life and music. Butch will regale you with stories and anecdotes that few have heard. Rare archival film footage along with photos from Butch’s personal files will be shown. If you’re an ABB fan, this is a opportunity not to be missed.

The Jam Band

The Allman Brothers Band is recognized as being one of the founding fathers of the rock/jam band genre and Butch has jammed with all the greats… from Eric Clapton to to Carlos Santana to Jerry Garcia. Butch, along with bass accompaniment, will demonstrate the technique and feel of how the call-and-response between two players can change the dynamics and direction of the music.

The “Whipping Post” & “Dreams” Clinic

Butch will take this afternoon to walk you through these two most recognizable ABB tunes. He will demonstrate their intricacies, nuances and time signatures and also provide written notation. This presentation will include both audio and video signature approaches to illustrate the evolution of these songs, along with detailed breakdowns. A late night jam session will allow those attending this workshop to play these songs with Butch and the NMA.

Roots, Rock & Rudiments

Butch will address the importance of learning basic drumming principles. His drumming career started in the high school marching band, and he will describe how his technique has evolved over the past 45 years. He will illustrate how he utilizes basic rudiments in many of the ABB songs. Don’t forget to bring your drum pad and sticks to this workshop.

Beginner Basics Workshop

Butch’s technical teaching assistant, Todd Walker, will offer an intimate clinic for those requiring additional instruction. This will benefit the beginning and intermediate drummers who would like to have some of Butch’s grooves broken down in a very simple, easy to comprehend format. These classes will be held at the end of each day to help students review and retain materials from previous sessions.
