Trey Anastasio joined his Hands On A Hardbody co-writer Amanda Green for a surprise duet at New York City’s Birdland club last night. The pair performed the song “I’m Gone” from Hands On A Hardbody, which is set to debut on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on February 23. Anastasio returned to the stage with his guitar during the encore for “Burn That Bridge,” another song from Hands On A Hardbody. The duo performed together at Birdland back in 2010, when Anastasio played with Green during her “Songs of Amanda Green” show. A video of the two performing “I’m Gone” at Birdland last night can be viewed above. You can check out our interview with Amanda Green, in which she discusses working on the musical with Anastasio, here.

Hands On A Hardbody is based on the award winning documentary of the same name. The musical version debuted at the La Jolla Playhouse in La Jolla, CA last spring. The production marks Anastasio’s first foray into traditional musical theatre, though the Phish guitarist does have experience with musical narratives, particularly his Gamehendge rock opera, which was last performed on July 8, 1994.
