Aaron Freeman aka Gene Ween has just posted a new song called “Genene.” In response, steady Relix contributor Scott Bernstein wrote in Hidden Track that he “contacted Aaron about Genene at his hospital room in Belgium where he is undergoing ‘a transformative procedure.’” Bernstein then reported that Freeman had intimidated he was undergoing a sex change. In response, Ween’s manager Greg Frey told Entertainment Weekly “that Freeman’s was likely pulling Glide’s leg, and that he doubts that the sex-change story is true.”

So stay tuned on that one but what we can report with certainty is that earlier this year Freeman announced he would be retiring his Gene Ween alias, placing Ween on indefinite hiatus. At that time he indicated:

I want to thank each and every one of you for all of your kind words and support,” he writes. “It means a lot. My decision to leave Ween, however interpreted, was absolutely not made in haste. It’s evolved over a decade’s worth of internal and external struggle. Know that I am extremely proud of all that is Ween. And while Mickey and I are going our separate ways, I wish him only the best. I will always have nothing but love and respect for what we created together. I need to now move on for myself and for my family. I still, as always, look forward to a future filled with music as Aaron Freeman.
